The restoration of the apartments of the Emperor at Longwood House: 1953-1955

;

Since the death of Napoleon, Longwood House has really been only one and only true restoration: it was in 1953. After the "repairs" in 1860 by Captain Masselin, catering private apartments of Napoleon directed masterfully by George Peugeot between 1953 and 1955 is exemplary.

1953 - Travaux aux appartements de l'Empereur  à Longwood - Bibliothèque

Funded entirely by the Foreign Ministry after numerous complaints (the most famous was that of the Queen (Queen Mother) of England in person), the work was done with a knowledge and a diligence that amaze even today when we know the logistical difficulties in St. Helena have hardly changed since.

1955 - Re-opening of Longwood House, March

The apartments of the Emperor were reopened in 1955 ... and are still in perfect condition.
