;
Since the death of Napoleon, Longwood House has really been only one and only true restoration: it was in 1953. After the "repairs" in 1860 by Captain Masselin, catering private apartments of Napoleon directed masterfully by George Peugeot between 1953 and 1955 is exemplary.
Funded entirely by the Foreign Ministry after numerous complaints (the most famous was that of the Queen (Queen Mother) of England in person), the work was done with a knowledge and a diligence that amaze even today when we know the logistical difficulties in St. Helena have hardly changed since.
The apartments of the Emperor were reopened in 1955 ... and are still in perfect condition.
